How to Set Up a Simple WiFi Hotspot System in Your Coffee Shop What is a WiFi Streamyx Zone Hotspot?

A WiFi Hotspot is an area that has WiFi access to the Internet. The term Hotspot is now used interchangeably for the both the area where the signal is available and the device (WiFi Router or WiFi Access Point) that is broadcasting the signal. Likewise the terms "WiFi Router" and "WiFi Access Point" (AP) are often used interchangeably.

How to buy and set-up a WiFi Router.

The great thing about setting up a Hotspot System in a Coffee shop is that normally one WiFi router will cover the whole building so it's not very complex to set-up. Wireless routers can now be bought for around $50 so setting up a Hotspot doesn't need to be expensive. The only other thing you would need is a DSL or cable connection to your shop, depending on where you live these normally cost around $30/mo.

How to control access.

The easiest way to setup a Hotspot is to set the router wireless security settings as "Disabled" or "Open". That would allow everyone access, but how can you control the amount of bandwidth a customer users or how long they spend online?

One option would be to set a WPA or WEP key on the router and give that to your customers. That would stop people in the neighbourhood using your connection but would not allow you to set time limits on how long your customers could spend online.

In order to do that you will need a hosted or stand alone "Captive Portal" this is a specially modified WiFi Streamyx router that appears as an Open or Unencrypted WiFi signal but then redirects any traffic to a specific web page called a "Splash Page" where your often asked to login or purchase internet access.

Hosted captive portals are often provided free of charge to business owners in exchange for a share of the revenue from the hotspot. With a hosted solution your customer gets redirected to the servers of the WiFi Company and has to pay for Internet access online. Standalone captive portals are normally sold outright to the business owner and allow you to generate tickets, which you can sell (or give) to your customers. Each ticket allows Internet access for a defined amount of time. A nice thing to do is to give your customer a free 30-min ticket with the first coffee they buy, then if they want to stay online longer they need to come back to the counter and buy another ticket, or another coffee :)

Make sure that the Internet providers are able to give you exactly what your company needs. Check for features such as e-mail accounts, domain options, connection time and speed.

Most ISP companies have various servers that are assigned to the client. Check how many other clients are using your server. If the server can�t handle the traffic, then the Internet will go down. For large companies, ask which lines they are using. Ideally you will want a T3 as they are more efficient and the speed is better then a T1. T1 are good for home use or alternatively small companies.

Enquire about e-mail accounts. Although when you first register with an ISP company you might have, say, 10 people at the company. But as time goes on, they might become 15, or 20. You need to find out that the ISP can keep up and grow with your company. To be able to set-up additional accounts without a long waiting time is crucial. Also remember that more people will mean you need more bandwidth.

There are various types of ways to connect to the Internet, such as dial up, Streamyx ADSL, etc. Dial up isn�t really a valuable or efficient way for a business to stay connected. It was one of the first systems in place and hasn�t revolutionized itself since. It would be similar to using a Morse code device rather than a telephone. For home use, dial up is perfect to download and send e-mails and occasionally surf the net. For an entire company to use this system isn�t practicable.

ADSL is fast becoming the ideal way for businesses to connect to the web. ISP providers offer a different amount of bandwidth and the speed is generally smooth and quick. Wireless is also becoming a decent option, but is more suitable for laptops then PCs.

Choosing an ISP for your company isn�t so much about looking at what�s on offer now or providing for your company today. You need to look at what your business needs tomorrow. ISP companies offer different sized packages, so although you might only need a small or medium package, you need to make sure that when the time comes, you can get a bigger one.
